Heresies Collective

The Heresies Collective was founded in 1976 in New York City, by a group of feminist political artists. The group sought to, among other goals, examine art from a feminist and political perspective. In addition to a variety of actions and cultural output, the collective was responsible for the overseeing the publication of the journal Heresies: A feminist publican on art and politics, which was published from 1977 until 1993.

Margarita Beccera Cano

Margarita Becerra Cano came to WSW from Colombia via SUNY-Stony Brook. She received an MFA from Syracuse University for Art Video Production, and did additional graduate work at Tulane. At WSW, Margarita’s artist’s book, Satanic Loves combined letterpress, photography, handmade paper and mixed media. Satanic Loves explores the historical manipulation of women’s sexuality by the Catholic Church.

Kolleen Casey Shields was a gymnast who competed for the United States in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. She finished 23rd in the vault, an event won by Nadia Comăneci. She was the 1975 U.S. national champion in vault. Shields competed for Southwest Missouri State University from 1977 to 1979, where she won the Honda Sports Award as the nation's top female gymnast in 1979. She transferred to the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree in Physical Therapy. Shields became a physical therapist at the University of Iowa. Tracy Chapman

Tracy Chapman is an American singer-songwriter, widely known for her hit singles "Fast Car" (1988) and "Give Me One Reason" (1995). She was signed to Elektra Records by Bob Krasnow in 1987. The following year she released her debut album, Tracy Chapman, which became a commercial success. The album received six Grammy Award nominations, including one for Album of the Year, three of which she won: Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her single "Fast Car", and Best Contemporary Folk Album. Chapman has since continued to release award-winning music. Chapman is politically and socially active. In a 2009 interview with National Public Radio, she said, "I'm approached by lots of organizations and lots of people who want me to support their various charitable efforts in some way. And I look at those requests and I basically try to do what I can. And I have certain interests of my own, generally an interest in human rights."
