The Stonewall uprising—also known as the Stonewall riots—was a series of spontaneous riots and demonstrations by the LGBTQ+ community against a police raid that began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York City. It is widely considered the catalyst for the modern gay civil rights movement.
