McCannon’s incredible collection started at our Spring 2023 Memory Lab. She brought in an incredible assortment of ephemera, photographs, and optical media reflecting her decades-long career as a visual and fiber artist, muralist, activist, teacher, author, and illustrator. As I began digitizing her collection, I learned more about her practice of retelling stories and histories of Black women, her participation in several activist groups, which led her to join the preeminent Weusi Artist Collective, a group that supported and gave voice to Black artists, and her eventual founding of “Where We At” Black Women Artists, Inc, alongside Faith Ringgold and Kay Brown that pioneered a new form of community-based arts education.
