Dorothy Weiss was a gallery founder and arts professional whose career was closely tied to the development and promotion of contemporary craft and emerging artists in the San Francisco art world. In 1984, she founded the Dorothy Weiss Gallery at its permanent location at 256 Sutter Street in downtown San Francisco, following her earlier partnership from 1977 with Sue Meyer and Virginia Breier in Meyer Breier Weiss Contemporary Crafts, Inc. An active member of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association (SFADA), Weiss played a key role in exhibition programming and public engagement, regularly organizing First Thursday openings with artist talks and participating in the annual Introductions exhibition highlighting emerging artists. She also hosted collector groups and special events, including a Glass Invitational in conjunction with the Glass Art Society Conference in 1994, and contributed to institutional initiatives through collaborations with the American Craft Museum and service as a Collectors Circle Affiliate for the American Craft Council.
